About

As we sat at Starbucks on the most gorgeous first day of what we, in Houston, consider Fall, my two “ABCD” friends and I (born and raised in India, moved to the U.S 10 years ago) chatted about everything in general and nothing in particular. Sipping on our delicious lattes, we talked about food and fashion, weddings and religious holidays, families and culture, and in general, lifestyle. This conversation however, had a distinct theme- the Desi in America. “Desi”, as we define it, is anything or anyone remotely connected to the Indian subcontinent, living in North America.

As the conversation unfurled, we realized that there was so much to learn, so much to share, so much to understand, about Desi culture. But, hold that thought. What exactly is Desi culture, in the US, in 2010? We had no answers. From that question was born the idea of a “lifestyle” portal. One that would showcase the quintessential “Desi”, regardless of where we were born.

Desi Living is the brain child of a casual conversation at a coffee shop, an idea that we believe is not unique to my friends and I, but a universal “Desi” phenomenon. We hope to build a community that reflects the true “Desi” essence, and display the deep diversity that is characteristic of our culture. We attempt to provide a medium of expression and a source of knowledge for our fellow Desis, and non-Desis interested in our culture.

Lynn and I would like to thank all the wonderful people who inspired us, and put in their time and effort to make Desi Living come alive. In the months, and hopefully, years to come, we hope you will support us in our endeavors and we will, in turn, support you.

Enjoy your time at Desi Living!!
